Found Gold - Eat The Reich

Found Gold - Eat The Reich

In "Found Gold," Mel reaches into the back of the junk drawer, finds a forgotten treasure, and makes Sean review ttrpgs that they own but haven't played to shame his butt into finally running it.

2 of my favorite things! Vampires, and killing nazis! The second I saw this in the store, I knew I had to own it. My immediate first impression was going gaga over Will Kirkby's art. Absolutely killer, and assuming they also did the layout, just fantasticly meshing all of the pieces together. It's set up mostly like a military dossier, with Kirkby's excellent character illustrations plugged in.

Some elements with the book printing really make this shine too. The cover has a window cut out which makes the face visible. Hard to tell from the picture, but it has some glossy texture to it besides just the ink illustration to mimic blood splatter. This printing also has green page edges which is just neat.

Having only read and not run this, my thoughts on the game itself are really surface level. But Grant Howitt's evocative writing, and straightforward instructions make it very easy to read, and I feel like I could take a stab at running. Right off the bat, Howitt sets the tone with safety instructions. Yes, this is a gory game about killing nazis. No, you can't say bigoted stuff at the table just because of the setting. No, the setting doesn't have to be historically accurate. Just have fun being vampires murdering the heck outta nazis! Makes it feel like a pulp war novel with a horror comic superglued onto the pages.

Players are literally dropped into gameplay, and the whole point is action action action! Players also get a lot of narrative control in every situation, and the ability to add flashbacks. While most of the gameplay is like a beat em up video game, this gives everybody a chance to add more flair and stretch out the pre-gen character's personalities.

The included adventure is storming Paris to end the war. There's a ton of locations with some mostly barebones details for each. Usually I'd want this fleshed out a little more, but there's a ton of coaching throughout the book on how to keep things moving. Each of the locations has it's own mini missions called Objectives, and the flavor of each is varied enough that it won't go stale.

I don't think I'd want to run this at a con, but just because of the time constraint. There's a suggestion of making this a short but multi-night campaign, and it makes perfect sense to me to let this air out over beer and pizza with our nazi hating friends.

So buy this book, kill nazis, and have fun!
